Ayumi Hamasaki (nicknamed "Ayu") is a 31-year-old singer who may be the most popular/commercially successful J-Pop idol ever. Dubbed the "Empress Of Pop", she has sold more than 50 million albums in Japan since her 1998 debut (which is believed to rank #4 all-time in Japan) and her popularity spreads worldwide. She is is the first female singer to have eight studio albums since her debut to top the Oricon (the Japanese version of the Billboard Music Charts) and the first artist to have a number-one album for 11 consecutive years since her debut. Debuted as a model at just 7 years old. Her music is sometimes considered one of the major forces in shaping Japan’s current music trends; this has been attributed to her constantly changing image as well as her self-penned lyrics. Also a trendsetter and icon in the Japanese fashion world. Amazingly, she continues to perform despite having a condition that has caused her to lose all hearing in her left ear, a problem that reportedly dated back 10 years. Despite the setback, Hamasaki stated that she wished to continue singing, and that she would “not give up” on her fans and that “as a professional”, she wanted to “deliver the best performance for everyone”. To date she’s released more than 10 studio albums, roughly 50 singles, 5 compilation albums, roughly 20 remix albums, 18 concert DVDs and 4 box sets. And she’s still going strong, remaining very active in music and continuing to put out new material. She also did the theme song for the major Japanese motion picture “Shinobi” and the 2009 US feature “Dragonball Evolution” (the song is titled “Rule”). And sorry guys-she's not related to AV idol Rio Hamasaki.
