Face aux difficultés de distribution entre les différentes îles de l'archipel, le journal Fiji Times, fondé en 1869 à Levuka, mit en place son propre service de messagerie. Le 1er novembre 1870, ce service express vit le jour avec la création des premiers timbres de Fidji, produits dans les bureaux du journal. Deux émissions historiques : Timothy A. Holmes pour The Philatelic Fondation Ce service privé, bien qu'éphémère (1870–1872), a laissé une trace durable dans l'histoire postale par la rareté et l'originalité de ses timbres. Deux émissions principales sont recensées : Premier tirage (novembre 1870) : imprimé sur papier quadrillé rose, chaque feuille était composée de quatre rangées de six timbres, soit 24 unités, avec une ligne dédiée à chaque valeur (6d, 1sh, 1d, 3d). Deuxième tirage (début 1871) : effectué sur papier rose vergé, cette nouvelle composition introduit la valeur de 9d, remplaçant trois exemplaires de 3d dans la rangée correspondante. Ce tirage resta en usage jusqu'à la suppression du service express le 12 janvier 1872. Chaque timbre était composé de caractères typographiques unqiue, ce qui confère à chaque position sur la planche des variations distinctives (cassures, irrégularités, espacement...). Le bloc proposé : un trésor philatélique unique Le bloc présenté est un bloc de quatre timbres, provenant du deuxième tirage sur papier vergé rose. Il s'agit de l'unique bloc connu en mains privées à réunir trois valeurs différentes : Deux exemplaires de 1 penny en haut, Un 3 pence en bas à gauche, Et un 9 pence en bas à droite (avec virgule après "EXPRESS"). Il conserve des couleurs fraîches, une gomme d'origine avec plis caractéristiques, et ses roulettes sont quasiment complètes (partielles à gauche, absentes en bas comme souvent). Sa conservation exceptionnelle est remarquable pour cette émission fragile. Ce bloc a appartenu à la célèbre collection Ferrary (vente 7, lot 312), et il est répertorié dans l'ouvrage de référence de Phillips (The Postage Stamps of the Fiji Islands, 1908, p.12, item "j"). Il s'agit d'une des pièces les plus importantes de la philatélie mondiale et nous vous la proposons aujourd'hui à la vente. Before the establishment of an official postal service in Fiji, mail was carried by merchant ships to Sydney or other ports, where it entered the regular mail system. Faced with difficulties in distributing newspapers and letters across the islands, the Fiji Times—founded in 1869 in Levuka—set up its own private courier service. On 1 November 1870, this express service was launched with the creation of the first Fijian postage stamps, printed directly in the newspaper's offices. Two Historic Printings Timothy A. Holmes pour The Philatelic Fondation Though short-lived (1870–1872), this private service made a lasting impression in postal history due to the rarity and originality of its stamps. Two main printings are recorded: First printing (November 1870): printed on pink quadrille paper, each sheet consisted of four horizontal rows of six stamps (24 in total), with each row dedicated to a single denomination (6d, 1sh, 1d, 3d). Second printing (early 1871): produced on pink laid paper, this version introduced the 9d denomination, replacing three of the original 3d stamps in that row. This printing remained in use until the service was discontinued on 12 January 1872. Each stamp was typeset manually, giving every position on the sheet unique characteristics, such as broken lines, irregular spacing, and distinctive typographical quirks. The Featured Block: A Unique Philatelic Treasure The block offered here is a se-tenant block of four stamps from the second printing, on pink laid paper. It is the only known block in private hands to combine three different denominations: Two 1 penny stamps at the top, One 3 pence stamp at lower left, One 9 pence stamp at lower right (featuring the comma after "EXPRESS"). The block remains remarkably fresh in color, with original gum showing characteristic wrinkling, and nearly complete roulettes (partial at left, as usual missing at foot). Its exceptional preservation is especially notable given the fragile nature of this issue. This block formerly belonged to the legendary Ferrary Collection (Sale 7, Lot 312), and is listed in Phillips' reference work The Postage Stamps of the Fiji Islands (1908, p.12, item "j"). It is considered one of the most important pieces in world philately, and we are proud to offer it for sale today."
