"Holy shit, Mayfair magazine. I haven't seen one of these since I was working on my first degree 23 years ago."

I bought that magazine when it came out, I was 19. She was one half of Mel and Kim, the pop duo sisters. She sadly died of cancer shortly after this

Sad to hear that. I was a keyholder/weekend manager for a bookstore near the university I attended, and the store prided itself on having every possible magazine it was possible to get in the U.S. including numerous foreign news/entertainment magazines and even porn magazines which had their own section. Mayfair was one of the magazines the store kept in stock.

Sounds like a great place to work

NO. It was TERRIBLE. Retail and ANY service-related jobs are the WORST jobs on earth, especially in the U.S. where people get off on treating low-level workers like sh*t. You have wealthy patrons come in and attempt to barter the price of books with cashiers, individuals screaming at you because you ran out of a certain newspaper, people coming in from off the streets who smear feces all over the public toilet and walls, menial jobs like sweeping/mopping/cleaning windows/cleaning bathrooms, etc., mentally ill individuals crushing on you or wanting to befriend you harassing you at work (and you cannot escape because it is a public job), VERY low pay, etc. It's something I would never do again under ANY circumstances. I use my degrees to teach, or I work at certain universities -- nothing else, ever, under ANY circumstances.

People should realise that menial jobs keep the world turning

Oh, and I almost forgot...customers will ALWAYS come in right before you close and refuse to leave EVEN THOUGH YOU RE NOT GETTING PAID TO STAY OVER. You are not allowed to physically remove them, can't call the police (as that reflects badly on the store), and no matter how many times you tell them you are closing or closed, they will continue to take their time. I once had a friend who would go into stores right before they closed and I would tell him, "We need to leave because these workers have to close and get back to their families -- we are preventing them from doing this," but he didn't care because every member of the Determan family is a POS. I will NEVER work ANY job where I must encounter the public EVER again.

Quite right, it's no way to be treated
