Up until around the 1990s, the standard treatment for bone cancer was to immediately schedule an amputation. So someone like Roberta here, a model no less, would go to the doctor trying to work out why they had knee pain and, as soon as a week later, begin life an amputee. And back in the 1960s when she lost her leg, prosthetics were extremely clunky and impractical, so they didn't care about preserving stump length. Not to mention, the concept of accessibility wasn't even really a thing... Handicapped people (before disabled became the preferred term) just had to deal with it. Those were the days!"
