"I would point out that images here of cruxees without feet secured are non-existent before this one. It's a hard and hazardous position to be in. In antiquity, feet were perhaps left this way for a short time only, because the strain on legs, belly and arms would be tremendous and accelerate the process of dying if not stopped. Nailed or roped, the event took a whole lot longer, delivering more pain and suffering to the one on the cross and much more fear and 'entertainment value' to the spectators.
