Dad verbally attacked both our mother and sister over something as minor as us missing a lunch. His anger was entirely inappropriate. We only over slept, but for all hew knew at the time we had crashed the car on the way to lunch and were in the hospital while he was fuming. We should hug mom, ask how she's holding up with a tone to indicate that we understand the gravity of what's happening. If she gets angry at us we very gently tell her "that's dad talking" she was with him for decades and his anger problems have rubbed off on everyone in the family, but now that he's gone we can all start healing. I also think we should suggest Maitland as a divorce attorney. She'll probably do it cheap since our families are so close. Strategy: stick to the goals above and keep our cool, don't get angry, be an understanding and supportive son and brother, and if anyone gets angry, remind them that anger is something we all got from dad, that he was quick to blame and that it's much healthier for us to be united against a problem than to blame each other for the problem. We overslept, yes, we're not trying to weasel out of it, but dad's anger is the more important issue. Oversleeping is an honest mistake, him getting angry at people who didn't cause the problem is a choice. She didn't kick him out over something minor, she kicked him out cause he was not in control of his anger or behavior. She did the right thing and she should not get back together with him.
