When I first saw the famous 19th century forbidden painting ‘Le Sommeil’ (The Sleep) by French rebellious painter Gustave Courbet, it sure woke up my bi-curiosity again. Wow! So real, so unpolished, so obvious that hot things had happened in that bedroom. Courbet had used two models for his painting: Irish redhead Joanna Hiffernan and French brunette ballet dancer Constance Quéniaux. The erotic painting suggests an exciting untold story, and I thought I should try to tell that story. Joanna and Constance meet in the morning, have a jolly and frivolous day in Paris, and then end up at night in the apartment of Constance with cheese, wine and - of course - luscious lesbian sex. It was in Paris after all :) I did my best with AI to recreate their faces - see their real portraits (still of very rudimentary quality at the time) at the end of the gallery. Fun fact: Constance (well, part of her) also modelled for Courbet’s most famous painting: ’L'Origine du monde' ('The Origin of the World)’, at the time a scandalous and forbidden depiction of a woman’s genitalia (also at the end of the gallery). Anyway, Courbet had enough to be inspired by, don’t you think?
