In the traditional reckoning of certain communities, a woman judged to have brought dishonor upon her caste faced a prescribed public penance. At first light, after the sun had cleared the horizon, she would be led to the central park. There her clothing was removed entirely. Iron chains were fastened about her wrists and ankles and secured to a fixed post or railing so that she stood fully exposed. For exactly two hours she remained in that state while the morning traffic of the settlement passed, the humiliation serving as both warning and restitution. When the allotted time ended the chains were unlocked and she was permitted to cover herself once more, the matter considered closed.
