Special project! A few months ago through a friend I was introduced to a student of the film academy in Amsterdam. He really needed a visual storyboard for a short film plot he envisioned for his graduation project. The plot was brilliant: it focuses on the time that Leonardo da Vinci worked on his now famous Mona Lisa and the tension between the model (Lisa Gherardini, a woman from Florence) and her rival (Isabella d’Este, famous art patron and collector and often referred to as the “First Lady of the Renaissance”). Isabella was furious that Leonardo (in his fifties at the time) didn’t want to make her portrait and instead preferred the lower-ranking wife of a simple merchant. In the film script they have a tense, dramatic standoff. I created the whole storyboard, and the graduation project went very well. Then - of course - I could not help working on a ‘deleted scene’ again in which the confrontation between the two women takes a very different turn, and afterwards it’s difficult to forget for both of them. I created these extra ‘inserts’ later and added them to the visual storyboard. At the time, we actually chose real-life actors as models for the storyboard: Alba Rohrwacher as Mona Lisa, Pierfrancesco Favino as Leonardo and, my favourite, Eva Green as Isabella. I think Alba and Eva make an intriguing combination in my extra scene. Really hope you like this one, I think it simply looks beautiful. Next stop, who knows: a real-live version of my previous gallery about the Girl with a Pearl Earring, featuring Scarlett Johansson …? Or maybe some more horror, does anybody still knows Rosemary's Baby or The Shining ...?
