The Mescalero (or Mescalero Apache) are a Southern Athabaskan-speaking Native American tribe of the Eastern Apache division, traditionally nomadic hunters and gatherers whose name derives from their reliance on the mescal agave plant for food and other uses. Before European colonization, they inhabited mountainous and plains regions of what are now south-central New Mexico, western Texas, and northern Chihuahua, Mexico, organizing in small kin-based bands with a culture blending Southwest and Plains Indian elements.
