The aim of this torture is to cause severe joint and muscle pain, headaches and psychological trauma. The technique involves placing a bar between the woman's biceps and the back of her knees, while her ankles and wrists are tied together. The bar is then suspended, looking like a bird's perch. The women are suspended so that their entire weight is placed on the backs of their calves, at a significant mechanical disadvantage, which places severe strain on their muscles, tendons and knees. They may temporarily shift some of their weight onto their upper forearms to relieve pressure on their legs, but this position is painful for the same reasons, and because the arms are weaker than the legs, rest is only momentary. Changing positions in an attempt to relieve the pain eventually tires the muscles in both the arms and legs, and the woman suffers pain that they cannot relieve.
