In the middle years of the eighteenth century, within a Balkan pashalik, Pasha Misha prepared to visit the local slave mart, intending to replenish the ranks of his harem. The market’s master and manager, Hamid Effendi, a man shrewd in commerce and long versed in the private tastes of his illustrious patron, made swift and secret arrangements. Knowing well the Pasha’s fondness for fair-haired maidens of slender build and delicate proportion, he dispatched his attendants and guards to procure such young women as might best delight his lord’s discerning eye.nnThose brought forth were all of lawful age, though untouched by marriage and still bearing the modest innocence of maidenhood. Before the day of display, they were committed to the care of the market attendants, who, according to established custom, subjected them to most careful and thorough ablutions. Their limbs were bathed and gently scrubbed with scented waters until their skin shone with a soft, unblemished luster; every trace of bodily hair was removed with meticulous diligence, so that their persons might appear wholly refined, smooth, and immaculate before prospective buyers.nnThus prepared, their fair locks combed until they glimmered like pale gold, they were instructed in a composed and silent demeanor befitting maidens placed upon public view. On the appointed morning, when Pasha Misha was to come “shopping,” Hamid Effendi ordered that they be exhibited entirely unclothed, their forms displayed without covering upon the auction dais, that nothing be concealed from the discerning gaze of the Pasha. There they stood in an ordered row, heads bowed and hands modestly arranged, like pale blossoms set upon a merchant’s stall, awaiting the moment when he would pass among them and make his choice according to his pleasure.
