A medieval merchant, once dressed in fine silks and surrounded by the trappings of wealth, has been lured away from his noble wife and life of luxury by the enchantment of a hideous old witch. Beneath the glamour of her magic, he sees her as a radiant beauty—youthful, wealthy, and impossibly alluring—her every word dripping with charm. In reality, she is a grotesque crone with mottled, wrinkled green skin, greasy white hair hanging in limp strands, deep-set yellow eyes that glint with malice, and a skeletal frame warped by a sagging pot belly. Through her sorcery, she spirits him away to her home: a rotting shack with broken windows, splintered walls, and tattered furnishings, hidden deep in a thorn-choked forest wrapped in purple-black mist. But to his enchanted eyes, it is a magnificent stone castle surrounded by a lush green woodland bathed in golden sunlight. There, he lives in blissful ignorance, wholly devoted to her, believing himself the luckiest of men. Over the years, he fathers three children with her—hideous in truth, but appearing to him as perfect, angelic heirs—forever trapped in her spell, never questioning the reality that holds him prisoner.
