Most of the Turkish harems, especially the larger ones employed a professional physician. It was usually an experience Arab female doctor but in many case, Pasha hired a white European specialist. These doctors were always trained as practical doctors, also as gynecologist and accomplished midwifes. Large harems had several concubines pregnant at all times. Arab or Turkish female doctors were educated as surgeons experienced in the art of female circumcision. European doctors were usually send to Cairo, to the University be educated and trained in this procedure. Some of these doctors performed the inspection under watchful eyes of Imams from the local Mosque. All models depicted here are 18 years and older.
