Margalit Ruth "Maggie" Gyllenhaal (born November 16, 1977 in New York City, United States) is an American theatre and film actress. The daughter is directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal (girl Achs) and older sister of actor Jake Gyllenhaal. She made her film debut in her father's films. She later stood out in the 2001 independent cult of Donnie Darko's 2001 hit. In 2002, she was a turning point in her career when she recorded a black SM comedy Secretary, for whom she earned critical praise and a Golden Globe nomination. Gyllenhaal has appeared in a variety of films, including independent Sherrybaby (2006), for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe, a romantic comedy Love in a Big City (2006) and high-budget films such as the World Trade Center (2006) and the Dark Knight (2008). She also appeared in theatre pieces such as Middle Relations (2000) and television productions including Goel (2004). Maggie had also already appeared in several movies prior to Secretary, such as John Waters's Cecil B.
