You may not know this, but in the Victorian and Edwardian era it was not uncommon at all in the higher societies to have mothers educate their daughters about sexual ways. And with that I mean also in practice, going quite a bit beyond the usual, awkward talk. You see, if you wanted to marry a highborn husband you had to keep him satisfied, in order to mitigate the risk of a divorce or the shame of a husband looking for satisfaction elsewhere. So how were you going to learn otherwise ..? I realised this again when I rewatched Titanic recently. There is a clear tension between young Rose and her mother Ruth, the latter fixated on Rose getting married to the wealthy Cal. There is a scene between the two in which Ruth straps her daughter into a tight corset, and many intense, confusing glances are exchanged between the two. So I imagined this would have been a perfect moment for Ruth to demonstrate to Rose how to make love and being made love to. However, with the sinful, lush body that her daughter has, it is not so strange that Ruth would get unexpectedly aroused while doing so. And starting from a few simple acts, the lesson would rapidly evolve into full-blown, sweaty, taboo-less lesbian sex. Both would find satisfaction over and over again, and one can only wonder how disappointed Rose would have been later on, in the marital bed. Of course, things went differently - courtesy of an iceberg - but I am sure stranger things have happened on the maiden voyage of the Titanic. I wonder how Jack would have taken it. Drowning in lust, maybe …?
