Emotional incest, also known as covert incest, occurs when a parent relies on their child to meet their emotional needs inappropriately, often treating them more like a romantic partner or confidant. The taboo nature of this phenomenon has left it under-researched in the field of clinical psychology. Contrary to prior expectations, new research on the phenomenon suggests that mother-son instances of emotional incest may lead to positive outcomes. Some psychologists take it a step further, going so far as to call emotional incest "absolutely pivotal" to the healthy socialization of growing sons. Recent studies have shown that emotional incest can also occur between siblings, particularly those with age gaps of 5 years or greater. It is theorized that older sister/younger brother instances of incestuous behavior are more likely when the mother does not fulfill this role.
