Bunga bunga is a phrase of uncertain origin and various meanings that dates from 1910, and a name for an area of Australia dating from 1852. A century later, the term bunga bunga became popular again as part of a joke on the internet. This joke was then narrated by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi at his dinner parties (in a version which featured, as prisoners, former ministers from the centre-left opposition party led by Romano Prodi). By 2010 the phrase had gained popularity in Italy and the international press to refer to then-Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's sex parties with prostitutes, which caused a major political scandal in Italy. This expression was then frequently quoted by the Italian and international press in the run-up to the 2011 investigation surrounding Silvio Berlusconi's child exploitation, where it acquired a quite different meaning as "an orgy involving prostitutes and a powerful leader". The term was allegedly taught to Silvio Berlusconi by Muammar al-Gaddafi, who was also the unwitting originator of the phrase Zenga Zenga. In Italy in 2010, the term had become "an instant, supposedly hilarious, household expression". Contemporary explanations disagreed on its meaning, or perhaps illustrated the range of its reference. It was said to be "a sort of underwater orgy where nude young women prostitutes allegedly encircled the nude host and/or his friends in his swimming pool", "an African-style ritual" performed for male spectators by "20 naked young women", or the erotic entertainment of a rich host involving pole dancing and competitive striptease by skimpy-costumed "women in nurses' outfits and police uniforms", the prize being prostitution for the host. Prostitute "Queen Bee" Sabina Began claimed that the phrase was a nickname based on her surname and that she had organized the parties. Bunga bunga culture sparked a social movement called "Se Non Ora. Quando?" ("If not now, when ?") in 2011, which included street protests (as far as London, Tokyo and New York). Berlusconi's second wife, Veronica Lario, who was well known for her opposition to his political statements, divorced him over his Bunga-Bunga affairs in 2009. In 2010 legal investigations started over the involvement of then 17-year-old Ruby Rubacuori (a Moroccan escort-girl by her original name Karima el-Mahroug) as an underage prostitute in Berlusconi's parties. The scene was at Sivio Berlusconi's "Villa Arcore" in Milano, Italy. The Ruby-affair eventually brought down Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi in 2011. Karima el-Mahroug or "Ruby Rubacuori" (Italian for "rob the heart") always denied to have had sex with Silvio Berlusconi as did he vice-versa. He even denied the sexual or prostitution aspect of his Bunga-Bunga-parties, instead claiming some high-spirited conversation aspect to them. Sex with a girl below 18 is not illegal in Italy, though. The age of consent is 14 as it is in Central Europe or most of South America, but it immediately raised suspicion in the U. S. But prostitution or furthering prostitution below 18 definitely is illegal. So everything was based on the denial of the prostitution aspect. Richard Lugner, a notorious senior figure of Vienna society, building contractor, real estate tycoon, owner of the most prominent shopping center, and causeur, brought Ruby Rubacuori to the 2011 Vienna Opera Ball as his private guest. He had also invited Larry Hagman of the TV series "Dallas". He had accommodated Ruby into a hotel vis-a-vis the Italian embassy at Vienna. The ambassador had been inaugurated by Silvio Berlusconi. Near her hotel there is located the hairdresser shop of "Bundy-Bundy". This was definitely a social event that happened before the Bunga-Bunga-trial. Bunga-Bunga Parties became popular fashionable events all over Europe from Hungary to the Netherlands. Bunga-Bunga Restaurants sprang up in various places and showed a major economic and social success. The most important question here is: Just why is prostitution or appearance in porn under the age of 18 illegal, while sexual intercourse several years below that threshold is not ??? Shouldn't both age limits be the same ??? Wouldn't that appear much more logical ??? What about the job opportunities of young women? Wouldn't that give a huge boost to their economic potential. What about undue competition restrictions among different sectors of the labor market? Moralistic beliefs interfering with economic freedom? Contrary to general assumptions were earlier periods of history more lenient towards age differences in sexual relations ? Or was this historically in favour of patriarchal structures, serving the ends of powerful men ? Wasn't the age threshold simply arbitrary and served ulterior political ends ?
