I'm sure many would, if they felt they could. Sadly, we live in a cruel world where love is limited by unnatural and suffocating restrictions. Most mothers and sons who are in a love relation are unable to show the world how much they love each other. Although some people still find it strange, I believe there are more mother-son couples than we realize. They simply remain invisible in order to avoid disrupting their daily lives. Frankly, I think mother-son incest peaked during the lockdown. I know many men who moved in with their mothers during the lockdown and still live together today. Despite having good jobs and incomes, they refuse to leave their mothers' homes. When asked why, they offer excuses like having a clean house and delicious food. Many of them don't even bother trying to meet or date new women. However, you can see the self-confidence of someone who has regular sex and is loved by a woman in many of them. The same applies to mature mothers. They take better care of themselves and are more well-groomed and fit than before. They look happier and more cheerful, just like a woman who is loved by a man. I hope this spreads like a contagious disease because, as you said, it will increase the level of happiness in society.

Once they started to think and talk about their relation and on how to carry on, it was actually an easy decision to make. They realised that they, unlike with their respective partners, already had everything needed for a long-lasting and happy relation.

Many relations starts with aroused attraction, high hopes and imposed expectations. A state of mind that, even though experienced by both parties, tends to be one-sidedly self-absorbed. The partner and the relationship becomes an accomplishment to show off. Sadly, once the initial spell is broken there might not be that much left to build on in the long run. Far too many get together without actually knowing each other.

These two won't have that problem. There are no secrets left between them, not any more. They have had a lifetime to learn everything about each others characters and quirks. Their friendship is deep and unconditional. The only thing that had been missing was sexual attraction and passion. That hurdle has now been overcome. Let the adventure begin!

Your are probably right. This longing is not unusual and it's shared by so many. I think it's much more than a sexual fantasy. I believe it's a deep seated instinct evoked when circumstances call for it. It might be nature's way of making sure that maturing women are well taken care of. If no man is there for her, one of her sons will be. It's probably applicable on other intra-family constellations too. If it had been a destructive and detrimental behaviour, those genes would not have been carried through. But obviously they have been. Just my theory though.
