Middle Class Motorcycle Eros — in the middle to late 1960s, and the early 1970s, motorcycle makers suddenly realized there was a vast untouched market out there, to wit, the same young people who were turning skiing and surfing into middle class sports. And so they developed small motorcycles, some no bigger than motorized bicycles, for the 20- to 40-something crowd. As they did so, they also found that their customers were mostly youngish men who wanted to ride bikes, but also…other things as well. And their advertising reflected that. This was particularly true for the Europeans, but everyone got into the act. Here’s some softcore samples. Three cheers to two wheels.
