Magdaléna "Magda" Vášáryová (born on August 26, 1948 in Banská Štiavnica, Czechoslovakia [now Slovak Republic]) is a Slovak actress and diplomat, prominent for her liberal anti-nationalist stances. She is an actress, known for Rusalka (1977), Die Wahlverwandtschaften (1974) and Eugene Onegin (1988). She was previously married to Milan Lasica and Dusan Jamrich. She auditioned, but lost the part of Sophie in Sophie's Choice (1982), to Meryl Streep. In years 1990-1993 she was ambassador of Czechoslovakia in Austria. After split of Czechoslovakia, she has been running the "Society for Foreign policy" in Slovakia. She was even the candidate for Slovak President in 1999 elections. She was later ambassador of Slovakia in Poland (2000-2005). From February 2005 to July 2006, she held the position of State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia. In the 2006 parliamentary elections, she was elected to the National Council of the Slovak Republic for Slovak Democratic and Christian Union - Democratic Party.
