Situated in the South Atlantic, West Falkland (or Isla Gran Malvina in Spanish) is the second largest of the Falkland Islands. Separated from the more populated East Falkland, it is a desolate and hilly island, of over some four thousand square kilometres, and constitutes thirty-seven percent of the total area of the islands.nnnnWest Falkland has fewer than two hundred people – the small population scattered around the coastline. The largest settlement is Port Howard. Located on the east coast, the small town has both an airstrip and an outpost for the Falklands Constabulary. There are other settlements dotted about the island; including Albemarle, Chartres, Dunnose Head, Fox Bay, Fox Bay West, Hill Cove, Port Stephens, and Roy Cove, most of which are linked by road. However, because West Falkland is located some distance from the capital of Stanley on East Falkland, it is considered part of the "camp", a Falklander term for the area outside of the main centres of settlement on the Falkland Islands…
