Judith Davis (born 23 April 1955 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia) is an Australian actress. In a career spanning over four decades of both screen and stage, she has been commended for her versatility and regarded as one of the finest actresses of her generation. Frequent collaborator Woody Allen described her as "one of the most exciting actresses in the world". Davis has received numerous accolades, including nine AACTA Awards, three Primetime Emmy Awards, two BAFTA Awards, and two Golden Globe Awards, in addition to nominations for two Academy Awards. Judy Davis was educated at Loreto Convent and the Western Institute of Technology and graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 1977. She found international success with the role of Adela Quested in A Passage to India (1984). Her performance was nominated an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. She went on to receive another Academy Award nomination (this time for Best Actress in a Supporting Role) for her performance as Sally in Woody Allen's Husbands and Wives (1992). Davis and Allen would go on to be a longtime collaborators; Allen once described Davis as "one of the most exciting actresses in the world". Brunette Aussie serious dramatist Judy Davis splashed into the world's attention at age twenty-four as leading lady Sybylia Melvyn in My Brilliant Career (1978)…after, of course, a jaunty, fun-loving adventure as Lynn in High Rolling in a Hot Corvette (1977). A big hit from Down Under, Brilliant gave the lovely Judy the chance to be picky about her roles, and she has often chosen to star in projects that are more literary than Hollywood, such as Adela in a Passage to India (1984) and as Harriet Herriton in Where Angels Fear to Tread(1991), both based on E.M. Forster’s novels of the same name; as Joan Frost/Joan Lee in Naked Lunch(1991), an adaptation of the William S. Burroughs novel; and as Cassandra in Gaudi Afternoon (2001), based on the novel by Barbara Wilson. If not by great authors themselves, the amazing actress also liked to choose films about writers, such as her role as Lillian Hellman in Dash and Lilly (1999) and as Audrey Taylor in Barton Fink (1991). And of course, there were plenty of Woody Allen word fests: the parts of Vicki in Alice (1989), Sally in Husbands and Wives (1992), Lucy in Deconstructing Harry (1997), and Robin Simon in Celebrity(1998). Like any good writer, Judy realizes that sex appeal keeps the readers glued to the page…and movie-goers glued to the screen. As such, she exposes her small but mighty breasts as Lou in Winter of Our Dreams(1981); lies shirtless on her back in the shadows of Husbands and Wives, her nipples reaching out toward the light; and reveals both her top and bottom frontal goodies in On My Own (1992). Judy continues to amaze us with so many good titles, including yet another bookish experience: Nurse Betsy Bucket in 2020’s series Ratched, inspired by One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey.
