There is an old stereotype that women from the former East Germany were mostly not very feminine, and that the country was actually hostile towards sexual freedom or body liberation. Maybe so in certain ways, but the DDR (German Democratic Republic) as the country was known from 1945-90 was also home to a thriving naturist/nudist movement, and there was more interest in nude photography than other parts of eastern Europe for a variety of historical and cultural factors. Here is a collection of nudes from the DDR, including a fascinating image of Angela Merkel, who grew up in East Germany and took part in "free-body culture" activities like most other young people of that time.
