The best thing about my Catholic School days for me was what went on between us girls in the dorms at night.
After a morning of lecturing us on the benefits of sensible eating from a well-known 'healthy' Nun, we all
returned to our classrooms with the forced resolution to eat more fruit and avoid the evils of a poor diet.
She also rebuked us all for the sinfulness of gluttony and over-indulgence in life's good God-given things.
Later we were all lined-up in the rather bleak refectory for our school lunches.
At the head of the table was a large pile of apples on a tray.
The same Nun had made a prominently threatening notice and posted it on the apple tray.
It read, ' Take only ONE. God is watching.'
Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was large pile of chocolate
chip cookies.
I instantly had an idea and hurriedly skipped back to my room.
When I emerged, I was carrying a hastily made sign of my own and placed it by all the cookies.
My sign read, 'Take ALL you want. God is watching the apples.'
My sore, stinging and very red bottom can testified that I was discovered and a duly just
punishment was administered to my thinly knickered behind by that same Nun and
my intense guilt for what I had done by my acts was made clear to the entire school.
I was also denied lunch and made to sit out at the front of the room, as an example
of an evil child, on my stinging ass.
Who said that one's school-days were the happiest days of your life! Certainly not me.
