I didn't get this until the day after I read it, when I was drying dishes with what we call in the United States of America a "tea towel".

Teat owl
The Teat owl is an owl which is used to dry dishes, cutlery, etc., after they have been washed. In 18th century England, a Teat owl was used by the mistress of the house to dry her precious and expensive china things. Servants were considered too ham-fisted to be trusted with such a delicate job. Teat owls have been mass-produced since the Industrial Revolution. The Teat owl is easily the most common owl in Britain.
