About me

My name is Karlijn Verhagen and I am 17 years old.
I found out that I loved to sing when I was 6 years old. At first I sang Dutch songs from the 'Kinderen voor Kinderen' CD's and I participated in several of their contests. When I was 8, I sang LIVE with a band in the finals of Zuid-Holland, for about 700 people. This was my first big performance and I loved dancing and singing on such an enormous stage. From that time on I knew this was what I wanted to do. Soon thereafter, I started singing in English and I found my first talent contest where I sang English songs overwhelming. I was still only 11 years old and competing against 20-40 years old singers. At the age of 12, I started with singing lessons. I now have singing lessons twice a month with an experienced vocal coach. I started guitar lessons in 2011 and in 2012 I started learning to play the piano as well, which I enjoy so much!
In 2010, I won 'Brielle´s Got Talent' which is a big contest locally, did my first photo-shoot, made my first 'real' music video and recorded several songs in a studio. In 2011 I recorded my first full (cover) CD and also recorded an original song that was written for me. Early in 2012, I appeared twice on Dutch television on a big new talent show called, ‘THE WINNER IS’. At the same time, as a result of the strong YouTube fan base I had built up over the years, I received an exciting invitation to perform live on stage in London on 1st December 2012.
For over 7 years I competed in Gymnastics. I spent about 15 hours a week in the gymnastics hall and 5 times I made it to the Dutch National Championship at my level. Sadly, in February 2012, I made the decision to stop with gymnastics after battling against two long term injuries. I still stay fit though by taking fitness and ‘street dance’ classes.
2013 was an exciting year for me. Early on, I became a YouTube partner and started working on my debut EP. I took part in X Factor on Dutch television and although I didn't progress too far, it did raise my profile in the Netherlands. In the summer, I passed all my final school exams and graduated High School. This allowed me to start a course of full-time study in music and production at Albeda College in September. It's a great college and I love being there very much! Also in September, I took part in the MainGrounds Sessions Music Concert in the Netherlands along with other artists from the UK, Canada and the Netherlands. This was a fantastic experience and I loved performing live with a band! Through spring and summer I worked hard on my EP and late October finally saw the release of 'WATCH ME' on CD. I wrote or co-wrote 5 of the 6 songs on it and was so proud of how it turned out. It quickly sold out and more copies had to be ordered. I was a little overwhelmed and so happy with the response it received! I'm having a lot of fun promoting with several newspaper and magazine interviews, television and radio appearances, as well as LIVE performances. Meeting fans who are so interested and enthusiastic about what I'm doing is the most wonderful feeling! As the year draws to a close, I am busier than ever. As always managing my time between college work, singing, playing guitar and piano and my fitness and 'street dance' classes, as well as performing, recording songs, shooting videos and trying to have a social life, is quite a battle! But if you want to reach your goals, you have to work hard and go for it!
Over the years I have made so many wonderful and supportive friends through YouTube and Facebook and I am so grateful for all the encouragement I have received. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!
