Is a stolen "avatar" like stolen identity?

We can recognize a person by there avatar just like seeing them in person, each of us have a unique look or stile,  if some one uses the same one is that like stealing there "identity"?

Comments and thoughts if you will.

    Thanks

    No, I don't think so.
Jealousy maybe, or just camouflage. Not correct, any case.
The person who's avatar has been stolen must be proud.

Using someone elses picture is a compliment.
    It shows what you like.
    It is also free publicity.

Using another one's avatar is not staeling to me, it's just a statement that either someones imagination is lacking, or that one just doesn't care, or just likes to identify with another one's idea or image. Still for me it's a serious matter, not in the sense of rights of possession but in the sense of identity. An avatar shows something about myself even if it's judt carelessness. I truly beliefe that people in general should be much more conscious of their own identity, not only in the virtual but also in the real world. An avatar change for me just means to highlight another aspect of my true identity because no avatar can show the full picture of all your identity facets or character traits, likes or dislikes aso. But it should always tell something true about yourself.

It is sort of like stealing an identity, but also like wanting to imitate or mimic...like a compliment....but since I made my very own avatar..and it is me in it...then I would feel very frustrated if someone took it.

As most people that know me on this site, I have two profiles, and I would feel VERY sad if someone "Stole" either of my avatars. I see an avatar and I associate it with a certain person. When someone "steals" it, it's not the same person, and I'm frustrated because I associated the avatar with that person. Both of my avatars have been the same since day one. It's like your name.....do you take someone else's last name? Ok, maybe in marriage, but we aren't getting married here.....yet!! LOL!!! At least be original enough to find an avatar that fits you. You can use ANY pic to make one on this site, so there is no excuse for not having an original avatar of your own.

an avatar is supposed to be unique, coming trough the owner's imagination...
of course, a lot of people doesn't have much imagination, and found easier to take an already made... It's not a theft, but it's not very cool too...
but no one can't do anything against that, there's no priority or property titles on avatars, so...
at least, the "thief" only stole an image, not an identity, and only gives the evidence of its own mediocrity...
for example, mine is a personal pic took with a friend, so if i see it somewhere else, I'll know very quick who's the kind of person who stole it... and won't have much consideration for him... or her...

As my avatar doesn't show my own face, I think it's kind of stolen as well...

Maybe, but what happens when you change your avatar? Do you become a new person? I think that an avatar is less an identity and more of a conceptualization of an identity. So the image can change and the idea behind it remains the same. Just my two cents.
