Sex - A dirty secret, or a lauded blessing?

For me, sexuality is something wonderful, and, when done properly, sweet, like a little love note that comes with the gift of life. Sexual development is CRUCIAL in all human beings, and this means trying things out - testing what gets you going, and what turns you off. However, so many people today are being raised to simply beware of 95% of sexual involvement, and just stick to what is considered normal. This is most likely because a lot of people are afraid of being different - the unfamiliar scares us, and we do not wish to be sneered at by our fellow man. However, this fear means a lot of people today must be walking around sexually unfulfilled, confused, or incomplete, simply because they never got the opportunity to develop an open perspective of sexuality.

Why have societies developed this general acceptance of what is right and what is perverse? Obviously, I do not condone any sexual acts that cause unwarranted mental or physical harm to others, but many types of sexual preferences that could be considered "fringe groups" or are less prevailent (gay/lesbian/transgender, BDSM enthusiasts, swingers, BBW lovers) are condemned by a majority of people.

There is evidence that a more open attitude to sexuality may be more beneficial to people. If you take a look at the sexual history of Ancient Greece and Rome, for example, where the borders of when it was deemed right to act sexual (and who to be sexual with) were expanded, there is evidence showing this produced greater bonds between people, because they felt more secure with each other. If you study modern countries with more liberal perceptions of sex and sexuality, it's clear it does a world of good. For example, despite the age of consent in Germany being a low 14, and a fairly relaxed attitude to sex and sexuality, Germany has one of the lowest levels of teenage pregnancy in Europe, and people are generally more comfortable with their sexual identity because it is not repressed. Japan's sexual culture is also a relevant one. Despite the laws on pornography in Japan being looser, their society thrives, contrary to what religion and the fearful may say (that liberal attitudes will ruin society). Sure, monogamy may come under fire with a more liberal attitude to sexuality and sex - but quite frankly, if you don't share similar views of sexuality (as well as similar preferences in sex) with someone, you're barking up the wrong tree anyway

Now looking at where i live, England, it's obvious people's perception of sexuality and sex still needs further development. The English culture is an aloof one, where the majority view all things sexual as seedy and peverse, and the media go into a frenzy whenever anything sex-related is reported. This has led to a whole generation of young people, so curious of sexuality because it is more taboo, getting into all sorts of messes. It's no surprise that England has the highest teenage pregnancy levels in Europe.

I absolutely ADORE people who adopt a similar approach to sexuality as i do - don't knock things until you've tried them, always refine your sexual identity, and never think that there are objective rules in sexuality. Sex (as long as you're not harming people) is whatever you want it to be, and if you find people who share your tastes, celebrate. And on top of that, every sexual outlet that does not victimise people should be available to those curious to try it. Sex is being oppressed - I hope one day it flourishes.
