1. NURSING IN PUBLIC – or: „EXPOSE YOUR NAKED MILK UDDERS!“

This is one of the most hotly debated issues on all (andalso vanilla or non-sexually oriented) breastfeeding-websites, those manyadvice pages on „stillen“ (the German expression), breastfeeding or nursing (inpublic?). Is a woman allowed to breastfeed in public? Or is it forbidden? Canshe be prohibited to breastfeed in public? What issues should she pay attentionto? How should she behave? Should she be decent and discrete? Or isn’t it herright to nurse in public? Isn’t nursing in public the very proof for basicfreedoms of mothers AND babies? Etc., etc.

Primarily in the U.S.A. and in some (but not necessarily all!!) Islamic countries „nursing in public“ is highly contentious, if notprohibited by law.

In the U.S.A. the question is even raised: IS BREASTFEEDINGA SEXUAL ACT? (see: http://www.007b.com/breastfeeding_sexual.php)This arose from the arrest and taking away of their children from a Peruvianimmigrant couple by Dallas, Texas authorities in November 2002. They hadcommited the crime of giving four film rolls to a local photo shop thatcontained among many others a photo of the mother (Jacqueline Mercado) breastfeedingher son. Parents were indicted for „sexual performance of a child“, asecond-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. It was only aftermore than five months and disgraceful court procedures that they regainedcustody of their children.

Quite „naturally“ breastfeeding is not perceived as a sexualact whatsoever after all that. And on Women’s Health Community most womenresponded negative to the humurous question from a student group on theconnection of breastfeeding and the sex drive (http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Womens-Health/breastfeeding-and-sex-drive/show/27471?forums=forums)No, they did not feel any sexual arousal from feeding their baby. Some evenfelt the very question to be a horrendous imputation.

So far this is a compilation from the esentially prudish,absolutely anti-sensual segment of our society devoid of any natural sex, anyjoyful embrace. Because no one can completely deny that the hormone OXYTOCIN(the „love“ or „bonding hormone“), plays a role both in breastfeeding and in sexualarousal, in sensual skin-to-skin contact and bonding with your partner. Butthis only furnishes another „scientific justification“ or „scientificexplanation“, not a vindication of sensuality, joy, desire or voluptuousness.

Nevertheless it is a fact that breastfeeding/nursing inpublic is not prohibited by law in any Western society. Rather US congress haspassed the „Right to breastfeed act“ in 1998/99 (signed into law by Pres. BillClinton in 1999), that allows every woman to breastfeed her baby on publicproperty where her and and her baby’s presence is allowed. In many othercountries regulation written into the law is hardly necessary, though thereexist numerous informal restrictions. An increasing number of women publiclyprotest for their and their children’s right to publicly breastfeed, and theyhave been very successful in this: in July 2008 McDonalds had to apologize toMaddie Reynolds, 27, for prohibiting her from breastfeeding in one of theirrestaurants in Bournemouth, UK, after she returned with six of her friends –who all joined in; in August 2007 H&M in Vancouver, British Columbia,Canada, had to apologize to Manuela Valle for asking her to go into a changingroom for breastfeeding because she was „offending other customers and there werechildren around“; in June 2010 Kristin Howard forced the city government ofKitchener, Ontario, Canada, to publicly apologize because when berastfeeding ata public pool a pool guard had asked her to cover up because „it would beinappropriate for little kids see her nursing“.

This already alludes to where women unabashedly bare theirboobies in full public and offer their breasts to their children: in cafes,restaurants, shopping malls, at public pools, in public parks and gardens, onrailway trains, street cars, aircrafts, on highway stopovers, on beaches, etc.,etc. Which means practically everywhere, especially in highly visible publicplaces.

It is not permitted to send off women to toilet stalls forbreastfeeding. It is not ok to force them cover up their breasts because thatwould infringe on the comfort of the baby. There exist public sanctions againsthiding a breastfeeding woman or „discretely“ concealing her from public vision.Her naked breast must not be bashfully covered up or disguised. 

On many breastfeeding websites there is hot rolling debatebetween protagonists of decent and discrete breastfeeding versus activechampionnes of public exposure. Some women prefer to retreat to the last cornerof a dark cafe, or use a specially designed breastfeeding room, whereas othersself-consciously indulge in the fun of presenting their milky udders in openpublic.

They dont mince their words in this debate, and use quitevulgar verbiage. Whereas some vehemently protest against „boobie goggling“ (literally„tittenglotzen“ in German) from horny guys, others seem to revel in that verysensual sympathy, and derive sexual pleasure from it.
