Love him or hate him - and it was easy to do both - George Steinbrenner did much that was good, as well as colorful. It's easy to bang on the Yankees as having the most money and "buying" championships, but often those big money free agents didn't pan out as "the Boss" hoped they would. Perhaps he got wiser as he got older; more likely he had a collection of players and managers who knew how to win and did it. He could laugh at himself and he was loyal and generous. The game and the Yankees will go on, but it will never be quite the same without George ... and now he can fire and re-hire Billy Martin forever.
