LaGone: The Sequel or "Hey Kids, Watch Me Destroy My Image"
|
|
For most of his 25 years on earth, LaBron James has been seen as a very special person. His combination of size and skill on a basketball court made him a sought-after player at every level, allowing him to skip college and go straight to the pros where he's cultivated a very fan friendly, good guy image. No accusations of dog fighting ... no "mini" Brons in cities across the nation ... no gun or drug incidents ... no domestic violence charges. He played his game, made his commercials and his millions and was well on his way to being a "global icon" - whatever that means. But then, some cracks began to appear in that PR campaign. He's never won a championship, which has been attributeed to a lack of good players around him in the past. In the eyes of many, he (and the team) appeared to quit in the waning seconds of their latest play-off flame out. That raises a sobering truth - LaBron need not "win" anything to move merchandise and make $. Of course, "It's not about the money" ... but it always is. Then the "humble kid from Akron" demands certain teams come and woo him, teasing everyone for weeks about where he'll play next season and - surprise, surprise - it ain't Cleveland. But his one hour ego stroke on ESPN was more than nearly anyone not in Miami could take. He's no longer a "special person"; now he's seen as a jerk. He's hung out nearly everyone he knows to dry so that he can have the spotlight, the place where he always chokes. He's a laughing stock at best; a traitor at worst and no longer the guy you want to be like ... unless you've got to be styling in his Heat jersey. Just remember "King", D-Wade owns the town and you've run out of excuses; other than that, enjoy South Beach, can't wait for the bad karma to roll in like Hurricane Cav Fan.
