Kitty’s internal monologue
I can’t believe I said yes, Kitty thought as she walked down the empty hallway, the aftertaste still thick on her tongue. I told him it stank. I actually said the words out loud. The memory of the strong, unwashed smell right against her face made her stomach turn again. And then he offered the bonus and I went straight to my knees. She touched her lips with the back of her hand, as if she could wipe the feeling away. His hands were on my head the whole time. I didn’t even move on my own. He just… used me. The wet sounds kept replaying in her head, louder than they had been in the quiet room. Anyone could have walked past that door. What if someone heard? She reached the elevator and pressed the button, staring at the closed doors. The money is good. The senior role is good. I keep telling myself that. But the smell was still in her nose, and the way he had held her still when he came made her jaw tighten. I swallowed it. I always swallow it. The elevator dinged and the doors opened. Next time he’ll expect the same thing. And I’ll probably do it again if he waves the bonus. She stepped inside, the conflict sitting heavy behind her ribs—the practical part of her already spending the extra cash, the other part still kneeling on the break-room floor, wishing she had walked out the second she smelled him.
