The invite went out weeks ago: twenty of us, more or less, driving three hours west to Eau Claire. Tom was marking one year on the supper club he'd pulled out of a dead man's estate. He'd booked a block of rooms at the motel next door so nobody had to drive home.
The thread belonged to Janet. Shelby and Lena were admins. People dropped off. A week before the trip, Shelby added Dan Jenssen.
He was her coworker. Tall, easy laugh, the kind of man who remembered drink orders. I had watched her eyes stay on him a beat too long and said nothing. By then our arrangement had a shape I could name if I had to and preferred not to: if she got hot for someone, I pried it out of her, and eventually they fucked. Sometimes I was in the room. More often I wasn't. She was still clumsy about the early part, the part she called setting a trap.
Dan wasn't in the Janet--Shelby--Lena crowd. Fun enough. Not inside enough. Shelby inviting him on a night he barely knew anyone was not subtle.
When the thread confirmed he was coming and still needed a bed, she looked at me across the kitchen island.
"He can stay with us. We've got two queens."
Her eyes were bright.
I said fine.
The club was loud and warm. Our group bled into the regulars. Lena spent an hour at the bar on two older farmers. Pitchers, toasts, shots. Dancing that started as a joke. Shelby wore the black dress that made her look taller than she was. Dan's hand found the small of her back more than once when they passed. I felt the old tight heat and kept drinking.
Around eleven I told her I was fading. She kissed my cheek, already flushed, and said she'd be up soon. I walked the parking lot alone.
Our room was ground floor. The far queen was already made. I left the lamp low, stripped to boxers, and sat on the nearer bed. I didn't sleep.
Just before last call I heard them. Voices first--hers, then his--crossing the lot. Then the quiet that meant they thought they were alone. I put my eye to the peephole.
They were between our car and the sedan beside it. Shelby's back was against the fender. Dan's mouth was on her neck. Her hands were in his hair. The kiss wasn't friendly. His thigh pressed between hers. She rolled her hips against it. One hand slid under the hem of the dress.
I watched her sink.
She went to her knees on the asphalt, unbuckled him with both hands, and tugged his jeans down just far enough. She took him into her mouth. Her eyes closed. His hand settled on the back of her head.
They didn't hear the others until laughter burst out of the restaurant doors.
She pulled off him fast. He yanked his pants up. They were still straightening clothes when they reached the door. I opened it before they knocked.
"I saw," I said.
Neither of them spoke.
"I watched you through the peephole. I watched her get on her knees for you." I stepped aside. "Come in. Don't stop on my account."
Shelby's lipstick was smeared. Dan looked like he expected to be hit. I shut the door and locked it.
"The other bed," I said. "Use that one."
They did.
I sat on mine in the half-dark and watched my wife undress another man. The dress came off over her head. No bra. She shoved his jeans the rest of the way down and took him in her mouth again, slower, like she had all night. He groaned and put his fingers in her hair. After a while she climbed onto the mattress and straddled him. I heard the wet sound when she sank down. I heard her breath catch.
She rode him facing me first, then turned so I could watch him take her from behind. She looked at me once, eyes glassy, and didn't look away. His hands were on her hips. The second queen creaked. When she came she bit her own wrist. He lasted longer. When he finished he stayed inside her, breathing against her back.
They didn't get up. They collapsed onto that bed, her head on his chest, his arm around her. I turned off the lamp. I heard her say a faint I love you. I hoped it was meant for me.
I woke sometime after three to sheets moving. Soft wet noises. Her whispered yes. I stayed on my side of the room and listened to my wife get fucked in the dark while I stayed hard and untouched.
Morning was the shower. The pitch of the water changed when two bodies stepped under it. I heard her gasp. I heard the wet slap of skin and the low sound he made when he came. They took their time. When they came out she was wrapped in a towel, hair dripping, and she did not look guilty. She looked satisfied.
Breakfast was the diner a quarter mile down. Two long tables. Shelby sat next to Dan. Their knees touched under the table. Janet, who had been watching all weekend with that sharp little smile, leaned in while she poured cream.
"Interesting seating chart this morning," she said. "You three look like you had a more eventful night than the rest of us. Care to confirm or deny?"
I didn't confirm. I didn't deny.
On the drive home Shelby was quiet for twenty minutes. Then she put her hand on my thigh.
"Thank you," she said. "For last night. For not stopping it. For watching." She swallowed. "I want to keep seeing him. If you'll let me."
"You're not falling in love with him, are you?" The words caught.
"No."
One syllable. Unconvincing.
"Remember the thrill?" she said.
"I don't thrill you?"
"You do. But it's changed. It grew. I'm talking about the stupid teenage kind. Tenth grade. Mark Aldridge. Caterpillar mustache, Girbaud jeans, Drakkar Noir. I spent all of WWII history writing Shelby Iona Aldridge with a heart over the I. White hot. I can't even remember his eye color now."
She paused.
"It's a little bit like that with Dan. I hope that doesn't hurt you."
"It does. It fucking sucks to hear, Shelby."
I hadn't meant to raise my voice.
"Monty. I love you. Love you. You are the real thing. You don't burn out. Your name doesn't become someone else's on a Trapper Keeper. You, Eric Montgomery, are the man I love."
Another pause.
"But we opened a door, and that new-relationship smell comes with it. Does that make sense?"
I laughed through the wet in my throat. She giggled with me, which made it worse and better.
"I like that giddy feeling," she said. "If it damages what we have, it isn't worth it. We can stop any time."
"You get that from Dan?"
"Yes. A little. I got it with Kenny, too. A couple of others. It fades after a month or two. It's part of the whole thing, hun. Thank you for letting me feel it again. But tell me if it has to stop. I will fuck and suck you and only you forever more."
"I'm human, Shell. I haven't had the same side of this that you have. We both knew feelings would show up."
"If you feel small, it isn't worth any short rush I get."
"I didn't like you shoving Dan into our trip. With everyone else. That made me look small."
She looked out the window.
"I'm still learning this too," she said. "We made rules for something that's against the rules. I'm still wrapping my head around the fact that watching me fuck other people gets you off."
"You seem to be enjoying it plenty."
I couldn't pull it back.
"Monty. That is the point. You're not supposed to like watching your wife get fucked by another guy. I am not supposed to like strange dick when I'm married. We break the rules and that is the thrill and then we want more. Weren't you expecting buyer's remorse?"
"I didn't know. I don't know what to expect."
I kept my eyes on the highway. We rode fifteen miles with only the hum of traffic.
My phone chirped. Janet.
I am not going to ask what happened in your room last night. I'm going to assume I already know. If you ever want someone who isn't your wife to take care of you the way she took care of him, you have my number.
I stared at the message a long time before I put the phone down.
The arrangement had always leaned her way. She pushed. Dan on this trip was the latest push. I got the watching. She got the fucking and the thrill and now half the posse knew. That part had been against the rules.
I had always figured Janet was available if I wanted a side fuck. She gave off that vibe. Now it was on the screen. No thrill in it. Too known, maybe? Or I didn't want her enough to bend any rules for. Maybe that was the safer fact. Maybe I couldn't split myself the way Shelby could.
Chuck used to call it sport fucking. Casual. I needed to get better at that. I think she already had.
I left the message unanswered and drove.
