It's pretty normal for a (even non-caption) gallery's first image to have around double the views compared to the other first few images, as it's just people going in to a gallery and after viewing the first image not being interested anymore. I have only done individual caps and it's the same for me, admittedly though mine are sometimes so long that I could understand not wanting to read any more after one. There are exceptions of course, but I would guess that in most cases this just because the uploader reordered the images after some time or because the other image's preview image is just more appealing to people.
