Chapter 33: A Change of Heart
Don walked into his office the next day with a purpose. He had made a decision overnight - he needed to end this relationship with his boss. He steeled himself, mentally preparing for the conversation.
His boss, Alan, was sitting at his desk, engrossed in some paperwork. Don took a deep breath and knocked on the open door. Alan looked up and smiled, "Don! Come in."
The casual greeting disarmed Don for a moment, but he quickly regained his composure. He cleared his throat and said, "Alan, we need to talk."
Alan's smile faded, replaced by a look of concern. "Sure, Don. What is it?"
Don took a deep breath, "I... I think we should end this, Alan. I can't continue like this. It's not fair to Amelie. It's not fair to any of us."
Alan listened silently, his expression unreadable. When Don finished, Alan sighed and leaned back in his chair. "Don," he began, "I understand where you're coming from, but we can't deny what we have."
Don wanted to protest, but Alan held up a hand to stop him. "I'm not asking you to choose, Don. I'm asking you to understand that what we have is real and worth fighting for. Can you deny that you have feelings for me?"
Don opened his mouth to answer, but the words got stuck in his throat. He couldn't deny his feelings. He was in love with Alan.
Seeing the struggle in Don's eyes, Alan stood up and walked over to him. "Don," he said gently, placing a hand on his shoulder, "I care about you. And I'm willing to take this slow, to figure it out together. Are you?"
Don looked into Alan's eyes, seeing sincerity and care. He felt a surge of emotion and before he knew it, he was nodding. He was surrendering himself to his boss again, and this time, he wasn't sure he would ever want to leave.
