The Sisterhood - Part 5
|
As I enter the sanctum sanctorum, she is lying sprawled out on the
Davenport, as always surrounded by the hermaphrodites. "So, how are the
preparations for the evening going? Everything on the up and up?", she
asks while strolling from the sofa to her desk, dragging the two blinded
pets along on their leashes.
She leans back in the burgundy Chesterfield swivel chair and I reply
with a frown on my face: "As well as you can expect, given the last
minute rescheduling and all. - I still can't believe he had the audacity
to resist our demands. He made us really look bad."
The twins disappear underneath the desk and with a push of a button their compartments are sealed shut.
"Well, I trust countermeasures are in place, Bettina?", she inquires further.
"Of course! His handler, his wife that is, has already received
instructions and a timeline. In two weeks we'll drop the hammer on him.
He'll be out of office in less than four."
She leans further back and puts her feet atop the heavy oak desk and asks: "What about the replacement?"
With a smirk on my face I answer: "Already taken care of and communicated to foggy bottom."
"So, who is it?", she questions further with a contented smile.
"A number of old geezers made the shortlist, but we decided to pick a
young and upcoming professional. He still has a long career as a
diplomat ahead and a lot to lose, compliance guaranteed. - So ... do you
want details, his name and ..." - "No, no, that's quite alright. Just
don't let this mess happen again. It's a blemish on our reputation and
unbecoming of the inner circle."
I approach the desk, remove her Louboutins and gently begin to massage
her feet. "Don't bother with the incidentals darling. Just bad luck, a
confluence of silly coincidences. Several members of her extended family
are inner circle and some are fellows, and most of them had already
arrived to attend the ceremony. Otherwise we would have just postponed
it. And of course she could have been more careful and not let her
passport expire for what is maybe the most important event in her life.
And who could have guessed that this prick ambassador would stick to the
book rather than obey his soon to be ex-wife, only to crumble under her
pressure in the very last minute. If a single one of those conditions
had been different, we would have had a smooth evening tonight. So relax
my love and enjoy."
With eyes closed she tilts her head backwards takes a deep breath and
sighs: "Well, it's a heavy burden nonetheless, and we can't afford to
cut corners, Bettina! We are the standard bearers of this august society
and for the first time everything is starting to come together.
Centuries in the making and only now we can see the vague outlines of
the palace forming, that our esteemed predecessors laid the foundation
for. We need to be careful, meticulous, and honor what was bequeathed to
us."
