Sexual activity reduces the risk of prostate cancer
|
Last month at the Congress of the American Urological Association in New Orleans, the most serious data to date were published to support the thesis that there is a proportional relationship between male sexual activity and a reduction in the risk of prostate cancer.
The thesis itself is not new - the first study was published more than a decade ago. However, the data presented in May (abstract no. PD6-07) are exceptional due to the large number of prospective patients and the long observation period.
Both of these factors make it very likely that the results obtained can be considered to reflect what is actually happening.
This topic is special because in the case of prostate cancer, we do not know of any other factors that could reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Sexual activity of men is the only possible point of reference for cancer prevention.
The first author of a study called Health Professionals Follow-up Study is Dr. Jennifer Rider, an epidemiologist from Boston. Almost 32,000 men were observed. During the 18 years of its duration, 3839 of them were diagnosed with prostate cancer and 384 died of it.
At the beginning of the study, the participating men (mean age: 59 years) were asked to determine the average monthly number of ejaculations when they were between 20 and 29 years old and between 40 and 49 years old. On this basis, an estimate of the monthly number of ejaculations during adult life was calculated. Respondents were asked to take into account ejaculations that result from both sex with another person and masturbation or that occur spontaneously during sleep.
At the end of the observation period, it was found that the risk of prostate cancer among men who declared at least 21 ejaculations per month was 20 percent lower - compared to the group declaring 4 to 7 ejaculations per month.
The author summarized for Medscape that we should not focus on specific numbers of ejaculations per month, but on the fact that the relationship between them and the chance to avoid prostate cancer seems to be proportional. Safe sexual activity therefore seems to serve the health of the prostate.
So much for a simple message. With its practical application in Poland (but not only) we may have a problem. It is easy to promote a slogan like: "Love your health!" or encourage sexual activity in any way, of course, while avoiding risky behaviours. But I can already see through the eyes of the soul the reaction of Catotaliban: sex without procreation? Ew! This is debauchery - senseless and godless!
It will be even worse in the case of indicating the positive aspects of masturbation - especially in those who, for various reasons, do not have a chance to have sexual activity with another person. Such a sin, even in the name of prevention of potentially fatal disease, will certainly turn out to be unforgivable.
Although Woody Allen long ago said that "masturbation is having sex with the person you love" (excuse me, but I can't remember in which of his films this statement was made, maybe someone will help to specify it?), but a normal Pole will not even dare to think so. Even if his life situation (e.g. health condition or being in a specific place) excludes traditional sexual activity in practice.
Therefore, being aware of the curse that threatens me, I allow myself to remind you of the slogan promoted by a sexologist, Dr. Andrzej Depka: "Make love long and healthy! It is worth taking it to heart. All the more so because we have just gained another argument for doing so.
