Abandoned by friends and family, nowhere to go, they decided to take their own lives, a sensitive farewell to seal mutual affection despite others’ rejection of their relationship and commitment.
A length of rope acquired, an old, disused warehouse was found where they would not be disturbed. On the day, they dressed in their prettiest lingerie, choosing black in keeping with the sombre occasion. At the destination, the rope was slung over a roof beam and a chair carefully placed to allow them to step off and swing clear of the support. The moment of finality must be irrevocable.
They discarded the old dresses worn for the journey and put on blindfolds, standing together for some time in darkness and silence, holding hands and reconciling themselves to their impending fate. Vanessa was the younger, weaker spirit and had agreed for Lorraine to make her ready and push her at the agreed signal. Lorraine would wait until her friend’s neck had stretched before taking down the cold body and herself standing on the chair, looping the noose around neck and stepping off into oblivion.
Words of comfort were exchanged, Vanessa’s blindfold removed and they shared one last, long, lingering kiss. Standing on the chair, head bowed in submission, Lorraine placed the lethal instrument around her friend’s slender throat, taking a final appreciative look at the appealing décolletage presented in the alluring black bra. Lorraine hugged her companion, offering final words of consolation, at last stepping to the rear of the standing figure. She waited, as did Vanessa.
Suddenly, a shove and the young woman was swinging from the end of a rope, the noose tight around her gullet. Arms and legs flailed about, all to no avail. After several minutes, all movement stopped; it was over.
The body lowered, the rope re-set, Lorraine stood on the chair, slipped the noose into place and stepped off to swing, to hang . . .
It was all over for the pair.
