Well, first of all, Life kills. Whether slowly, or quickly. Secondly, you don't have to be great to be lonely. Steinbeck's quote probably appealed to those who fawn over "great and special" things. Even those surrounded by people, needed and needled by people can and do feel lonely. And in that perspective we are not alone!
