Anyone else miss the "Who's Online?" link?

Postby Silversleeves on Mon Apr 25, 2011 4:55 pm

I certainly do, especially lately.

On the one hand, my galleries of genres and classes of pics that have proven unbeatably popular in the past are now going for several days in a row with some of the pics in them not even getting one cycle count (3 views). I reckon if I had a better idea of who, how many, members were logged in and a rough idea of the number of visitors and newcomers surfing IF, I'd be able to reason out why this was happening.

Comments?

Oh, yes. It was useful, especially when things were slow. You could click on it -- from near to the bottom of your Profile page, gallery thumbs pages, even the Uploader pages I believe -- and the first line of a new page would read "ImageFap has 1033 members and 160 visitors" or some other combination of numbers. Then, using the even older color code that used to correspond to the number of Fans one had, it would show a breakdown of what class of "popularity" the logged-in members belonged to. This last was taken out first, around the time Verification was implemented, which pretty much spelled the end of the "Who's Online?" link, as not too long afterward it stopped working altogether. After a few months of that, the techs took it out.

A few threads griping about its slow demise and eventual removal might still be on the Forums. I'll do a search and see if I can find any, then post them here.

I found two.

Problems with it? (Site Stuff, March '10)
How far down the to-do list is it? -- I'm the OP on that one (Help & Support, April '10).

Nothing before or since -- except this thread and a SUGGESTION that it be brought back and duplicated in the chatrooms.

I was thinking more in terms of views hits in galleries.

I find I'm often asking myself, "Why aren't the genres of my pics and galleries getting the views hits they used to?" When the "Who's Online?" link worked, I could usually glean an answer from the numbers it gave.

Now I'm just left guessing or, worse, thinking that after so many server failures, feature hiccups and Uploader changes, the folks who used to "mob" my (and others, I have no doubt) galleries have by and large left ImageFap.
