Too many requests. Retry in 1 hour?

I don't download galleries and I don't make 100 requests per minute but yesterday and today I'm unable to access the website at all, I'm just getting the too many requests message.

I have run into the one hour lockdown thing a few times in the last week or so, despite using a tablet, and sticking to individual images. At first, I thought it might have been because of the large size of some images, at 4-6 MB.

I regularly download individual images / gifs, but I have never used a mass download option (to my knowledge). It is possible that I could be hitting the 1000 requests / hour, but that would still be rather fast when using a touch screen.

But I do thank you longhairfish for the explanations, it will make it easier to avoid the issue in the future.
