Video descriptions?

When uploading videos, during the upload process I am urged to type a title and a description. And also, when I edit the video, the description is required. However, the description is never shown anywhere, as far as I can see. Why is that?
I also think that it is very strange that commas and periods are not allowed in the description. Not that it matters much, since the description isn't shown anywhere...
