Request to remove copyrighted material

Hi.

I received a personal message from someone purporting to be the copyright owner of some of the images that I've posted.

Since I downloaded these from a public website that allows visitors to download the images at no charge, they are already in the public domain.

What's more, whilst I don't want to violate anyone's copyright, it's not clear to me that the user that contacted me here is actually the copyright owner.

I'm interested in knowing what other users would do in this situation.
