Look forward to wrestling someday with themed captchas, identifying characters knotted within wirey fuzzwuzz of a kind of bot i do admire.

Captchas don't keep out spammers, they keep out robots. If the problem is security of accounts, then it's probably a robot that can attempt a login with a thousand different passwords every second.

Another solution to this kind of attack is to have a "wrong password" limit. Fail the login X number of times and be locked out for Y number of hours (or until you beg an administrator for a reset).

As I see that the captcha is no longer there, I'm assuming the admin staff are working on another answer.

I can't log in. I tried three different browsers and it keeps kicking me back to the same screen. I press enter, I hit log in. I enter captcha after captcha. Letters and words. And nothing works. I enter random words in the username and password and it doesn't even say the password or username is invalid. Something is wrong with the system.

I really doubt a CAPTCHA will hold off hackers. Hackers can read you know, some even have glasses.

CAPTCHA's are meant to avoid bots auto registering or placing automated comments.
And ONLY that. Nothing more, nothing less.
Bots can't read.
So having a CAPTCHA on a login page is pure BS and totally unnecessary.

Hackers either insert a script (which was easily possible a few months ago btw) or make the site go all turtle with a DDoS.

You answered your own statement. We had bots. Lots of them. Captcha is not here to make everyones life miserable. If you knew how things happened over the last few weeks it would be easier to explain. But obviously I won't be telling you that.
