When I was very young I got a can of drano and tried to drink it, the caustic chemical attacked my tongue and the inside of my mouth....at the hospital specialists were brought in although much of my tongue had been destroyed it was determined that it could be reshaped with the help of a flexible material surrounded by the remaining tongue tissue and skin graphs from the underside of my penis, I'm told that the skin on your tongue, lips and penis is different from the skin that covers most of your body and it is the only skin that would work.

Over the years there were more skin graphs and cosmetic surgery, the doctor's goal was to keep my handsome face symmetrical, that I look normal, and speak fairly clearly even though my tongue was now a thin 6 inch spiral of ribbed and scarred flesh.  

 Physical therapy involved sitting with my chin on a rest and repeatedly trying to touch a mirror set 3 inches away then 4 inches, my tongue touching the top, sides and bottom of the mirror.  The muscles in my mouth and tongue became stronger over time and I was able to eventually extend my tongue nearly 7 inches beyond my lips.  The flexible plastic that could expand and contract within the skin, a sterile material used in men with erection issues worked beautifully if not too well.
